Jensen Farms in Colorado has been reported as the source of contaminated cantaloupes distributed and sold in several states which has resulted in illness and death. US officials report that more deaths can be expected in the coming weeks since the incubation period for Listeria can be one month or longer.
The 84 illnesses and 16 deaths to date have been reported as the deadliest food outbreak in more than a decade. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has reported the cantaloupes are labeled as:
- “Colorado Grown”;
- “Jensenfarms.com”;
- “Sweet Rocky Fords”; or
- “Distributed by Frontera Produce”.
However, Jensen Farms officials have advised that their cantaloupes are often sold and then re-sold so it is possible that labeling may be changed. Cantaloupes from Jensen Farms were last shipped on September 10, 2011. However, since the shelf life is about 2 weeks more outbreaks are expected to surface.
