Everyone loves to have fun and enjoy inflatable amusement rides. Unfortunately, the risks associated with these rides often are unknown. The safety of participants is left to the manufacturers of these products, as well as the individuals and companies that set up and operate the products.
The increase in injuries occurring on these inflatable rides is significant and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued numerous press releases over the years to warn of the dangers and proper use.
Over the past year alone, there have been numerous reports of inflatable rides and “bounce houses” being picked up from the ground and blown away while individuals were inside the inflatable. The most common cause of the inflatables blowing away is use of the inflatables during windy conditions as well as failure to secure the inflatable to a permanent fixture.
These inflatables are often tethered to insecure objects that are not durable enough to hold down the inflatable. Other inflatables are merely tied down or anchored to the ground providing little security against strong gusts of wind.
Most recently, 13 individuals in Oceanside, New York were injured when the inflatable ride they were in was picked up off the ground by a wind gust. Several children were inside the inflatable and were injured in the ordeal. Witnesses say they saw sand bags anchoring the inflatable to the ground. According to CPSC guidelines, sandbags may not have been a sufficient anchor.
In addition to the dangers of inflatable amusement rides, serious injuries occur while riding on roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and other rides. The accidents occur as a result of defective products, products that are not properly maintained, and products that are not properly assembled or operated.
